Research in the Mao group is focused on operando imaging-guided materials design for sustainability and healthcare. Our central goal is to engineer mesoscale functional heterogeneities in artificial materials for better performance and new properties. We seek to design materials based on insights from operando functional imaging tools that elucidate the functional roles of mesostructures and their relations to atomic/molecular information and macroscopic properties.
